FAQs about hotels in Chester

A Walk Through History

Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.

The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.

Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.

In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.

Booking.com’s range of Chester accommodation includes hotels with swimming pools, guest houses by the train station and B&Bs with parking near Chester Airport.

The city is vegan friendly, as well as the people being friendly. All historic sites are within walking distance, there is a sightseeing bus that does a tour with added river cruise as part of the price. Chester is still being excavated due to new architectural findings. The Visitor centre is well located, near to the cathedral, and the staff are very helpful. There are many places to eat, some restaurant chains and many local businesses.

The room was very clean and quiet and I found it very comfortable and well lit, with a kettle, fridge and hair dryer included. The hotel is very conveniently placed within walking distance of local shops and other amenities and is also within walking distance of Chester city centre. I also enjoyed the Buffet style breakfast. The staff were very courteous and helpfull There is a reasonable amount of car parking and the carpark at the adjacent Chester House may also be used if all bays at the Chester Court are occupied.

The location was perfect for our two night stay. Chester has plenty to see/do that can be done walking or by bus. Good shopping and cafes/restaurants. The lady on reception on arrival and the next day was very helpful with recommendations for where to eat and without asking provided me with an extra sheet as the duvet was too hot. The hotel was quiet but I did ensure that my booking did not coincide with a race day or weekend knowing (from experience) that you won't get much sleep.

Location quite simply could NOT be better! Walk out the door and you are on the High Street. Car Parking in the Grosvenor shopping mall with entrance to the Hotel. Staff were warm and friendly and could not do enough Food was amazing in the restaurant - really up there - fine dining. Covid Impact is evident and all Health and Safety precautions are in place. We only stayed one night unfortunately but would highly recommend this property for a relaxing stay in Chester.

Exceeded my expectations - quality finishes and furnishing everywhere, quiet, spacious, full of charm and elegance beyond what is customary. Thick, large towels and quality wooden hangers in the wardrobe. Lovely and large sitting room to gather in outside of room. Perfect location to walk into Chester or to village shops and restaurants. Owners are on premises and keep things to a high level. Delicious and fast breakfast service. Parking was good.

Hotel was central in Chester, very close to shops and resturants. Able to leave bags at the hotel before and after check in/out. Room was adequate. Had a twin room but after visiting other Macdonald hotels, this one was on the smaller size, good sized bathroom. There was 1 staff member who got us some glasses and ice who was very friendly and chatty, but this seemed a rarity for those who worked there (see negatives).
